Introducing The Collar Code™️: A Clearer Way to Understand Your Dog’s Training Progress

A few years ago, I was sitting at my son’s karate class, watching the kids work toward their next belt level.

They were so excited.

They knew what they were working toward. They could see their progress. They were proud of what they had earned. And every new level meant something.

I remember sitting there thinking, dog owners should get to feel this too.

Because one of the hardest parts of dog training is not always the training itself. A lot of the time, it is not knowing where your dog stands, what progress actually looks like, or what they need next.

You might feel like your dog is doing better… but not be sure how much better.

You might know your dog needs help… but not know where to start.

You might be working hard… but still feel unclear on what comes next.

That is exactly why we created The Collar Code.

What is The Collar Code?

The Collar Code is our simple, five-level training progression and certification system designed to help dog owners better understand their dog’s progress.

The five levels are:

  • White
  • Orange
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Black

Each level represents a different stage of growth as a dog builds real-life skills through positive, relationship-based training.

And yes, there is a fun visual piece too.

Dogs earn a bandana color that matches their level, which gives families something exciting and tangible to celebrate.

But the bandana is not the point.

The real value is the training behind it.

Why we created it

Training progress can feel confusing when you do not know what to look for.

A dog may be doing well in one area but struggling in another. A puppy may be right where they should be for their age, but the family may still feel behind. An adolescent dog may need more support with focus, confidence, or real-life practice before moving forward.

The Collar Code gives us a shared language.

It helps us say:

  • here is where your dog is now
  • here is what they are working on
  • here is what progress looks like
  • here is what support may help next

That makes training feel clearer, more motivating, and a whole lot easier to understand.

Different dogs start in different places

This is really important.

Not every dog starts at the same level.

A puppy, a newly adopted dog, an adolescent dog, and an adult dog with prior training may all begin in different places depending on:

  • age
  • skill level
  • confidence
  • life experience
  • environment
  • ability to work around distractions

That does not mean one dog is “better” than another.

It just means each dog is an individual, and the dog in front of you matters.

The goal is not to rush dogs through levels.

The goal is to understand what your dog needs now and build from there.

How dogs earn levels

Dogs earn Collar Code levels by building real-life skills over time.

This is not about perfection, and it is not about doing a few tricks in one familiar room.

It is about developing useful, practical skills that help dogs and families enjoy life together more.

That may include things like:

  • focus
  • handling
  • calmness
  • confidence
  • manners
  • response to cues
  • working around distractions
  • applying skills in real-life settings

The system is designed to reflect real progress, not just checking a box.

How Sit n Stay programs fit in

One of the things I love most about The Collar Code is that it connects so naturally to the different ways we already help dogs and families.

A dog might begin building their foundation through:

Different dogs need different paths, and that is okay.

The Collar Code helps make those paths feel more connected and easier to understand.

Why this matters right now

Summer is such a great time to think about your dog’s setup, routines, and next steps.

Schedules change. School ends. Guests visit. Storms pop up. Outdoor activities increase. Dogs are out and about more. And a lot of families start realizing they are not quite sure what their dog needs next.

That is the perfect time to step back and ask:

Where is my dog right now?

What are we working toward?

What kind of support would help most?

That is exactly the kind of clarity The Collar Code is meant to create.

Final thoughts

The Collar Code started as a little light bulb moment in a karate class.

But it became something much bigger.

It became a way to help dog owners feel clearer, more encouraged, and more excited about their dog’s progress. It became a way to celebrate growth while staying grounded in real-life training. And it became a way to match support to the dog in front of us.

Because a better summer, and honestly a better life with your dog, starts with understanding what your dog needs now — not what we wish they needed.
