Puppy Parenting, Perfected: A Guide to Your First Weeks

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exciting adventure filled with joy, love, and a few challenges along the way. The first weeks are crucial for setting the foundation for a happy and well-behaved dog. At Sit n Stay Dog Training, we understand the importance of these early days and are here to help you navigate this journey with confidence and positivity. Here’s your guide to perfecting puppy parenting in those critical first weeks.

Setting Up a Safe and Comfortable Space

Your puppy’s new home should be a safe haven where they feel secure and loved. Start by creating a designated area with a comfortable bed, water, and some toys. This space will serve as their sanctuary, especially when you’re not around. Crate training is also beneficial as it helps with potty training and provides your pup with a safe space to retreat. Many people still feel crate training is cruel, but the truth is that most dogs adjust very well to a crate, and it helps keep both your pup and your home and belongings safe. It is not helpful to have your pup in for emergency surgery due to swallowing something they shouldn't have access to.

Establishing a Routine

Puppies thrive on routine. Consistent feeding, potty breaks, and playtimes help them understand what to expect and when. This predictability reduces anxiety and makes training easier. Aim to feed your puppy at the same times each day and take them outside for potty breaks regularly, especially after meals and naps. Be careful to ensure that routines are the same, but not necessarily every detail or time everything to the second. If you make their routine and schedule too rigid, you can create stress when you want to sleep in, weather doesn't allow for their regular walk or you have company over that may disrupt the schedule.

Positive Reinforcement Training

Training should start as soon as your puppy comes home. At Sit n Stay Dog Training, we advocate for positive reinforcement methods, which involve rewarding good behavior with treats, praise, or play. This approach not only builds a strong bond between you and your puppy but also fosters a love for learning. Start with basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come,” and always reward your puppy when they obey. A benefit of positive training is that it allows you to start as soon as your pup comes home. Other methods require waiting for the pup to be 6 months or older due to the type of training methods but this isn't the best for learning and can allow bad habits to take hold in those first 6 months.

Socialization is Key

The first few weeks are a critical period for socialization. Exposing your puppy to different people, environments, and other animals helps them become well-adjusted adults. Take your puppy on short outings, invite friends over, and let them interact with other friendly dogs. Remember to keep these experiences positive and not overwhelming. Remember that socialization is so much more than just playing with other pups!

Handling Teething and Chewing

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, which means chewing is a natural behavior, especially during teething. Provide plenty of chew toys to satisfy their need to gnaw and redirect them from inappropriate items like furniture or shoes. If your puppy starts chewing on something they shouldn’t, gently redirect them to an appropriate toy. Also keep in mind that mouthing you is a social behavior as it is how dogs often play with each other, but we want to always redirect that to chewing on appropriate items instead of hands and clothing.

Patience and Consistency

Training a puppy requires patience and consistency. There will be accidents and moments of frustration, but it’s essential to stay calm and consistent with your training approach. Puppies don’t understand punishment and it can lead to fear and anxiety. Instead, focus on guiding and encouraging them towards the desired behaviors.

Building a Bond

Your relationship with your puppy is built on trust and love. Spend quality time with them through play, training, and simply being together. This bond will make training easier and more enjoyable for both of you.
