Spring has a funny way of making us all want more freedom.
The doors are open. The yard is active. The parks are busier. The smells are stronger. The squirrels are bolder. And suddenly the dog who comes running in the kitchen acts like they have never heard their name before.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the thing: your dog probably does know how to come when called… in the places you’ve practiced. But dogs don’t generalize well. That means “come” in your living room is not automatically the same as “come” when there’s a rabbit, a neighbor, wet grass, kids playing, or another dog walking by.
Recall is not just a cue. It’s a relationship skill.
A reliable recall is built through practice, trust, and really good reinforcement.
If you want more freedom with your dog this spring, start here:
1. Practice before you need it
Don’t wait until your dog is already chasing something to test their recall. Practice when they’re only mildly distracted, then slowly make it harder.
2. Pay well
Coming when called should be worth it. Use food, praise, play, running away from your dog, or whatever makes your dog light up.
3. Don’t punish the comeback
If your dog comes back and the fun immediately ends every single time, they may start thinking, “No thanks.” Sometimes call them, reward them, and then let them go back to sniffing.
4. Use a long line
A long leash gives your dog room to explore while still keeping safety first. Freedom does not have to mean off-leash.
5. Be more interesting than the environment
That does not mean you need to be perfect or exciting every second. It means your dog should have a long history of learning that checking in with you pays off.
Spring freedom is possible, but it starts with a plan.
You don’t need to yell louder or repeat your dog’s name 15 times. You need to help your dog understand that coming back to you is always a good choice.
