Your Puppy Isn’t Listening… But Are You Listening to Your Puppy?

One of the most common things I hear from people is:

“I’ve had Goldens before, but this one just isn’t listening.”

Or, “My other dogs never did this!”

And I get it.

When you’ve had dogs before — especially the same breed — it’s natural to assume this puppy will be similar. You think you already know what to expect. You think what worked before should work again.

But here’s the thing:

All dogs are different.

Even if they are the same breed.

Even if they came from the same breeder.

Even if they look similar.

Even if you’ve raised three dogs before this one.

Breeding is different. Personalities are different. Life experiences are different. Each individual dog is different.

And sometimes, the biggest challenge is not that your puppy isn’t listening to you.

It’s that you may not be listening to your puppy.

Your puppy is communicating all the time

Dogs are talking to us constantly.

They tell us when they’re overwhelmed.

They tell us when they’re confused.

They tell us when they’re unsure.

They tell us when they need more support, more clarity, more rest, or a different approach.

The question is: are we actually paying attention?

A lot of times, we are so focused on what worked with our last dog that we miss what this dog is telling us right now.

And honestly, humans do this with each other too.

We all listen through our own lens

Think about this: you can have one speaker at an event, saying one consistent message, and 20 people walk away hearing 20 different things.

Have you ever noticed that?

That happens because we do not listen in a vacuum. We listen through our own lens.

Our backgrounds, experiences, expectations, beliefs, stress, and even past hurts all shape how we hear things. We all bring bias into the conversation, whether we mean to or not.

And we do the exact same thing with our dogs.

We look at them through the lens of:

  • the dogs we have had before

  • what we expected this breed to be like

  • what we hoped having a puppy would feel like

  • what we believe they “should” already know

  • what has worked for us in the past

Sometimes that lens helps us.

Sometimes it keeps us from seeing the dog right in front of us.

Your dog always has a point of view

This is something I believe so strongly:

The dog always has a point of view.

That does not mean the dog gets to make every decision.

It does not mean we let go of boundaries.

It does mean we need to pay attention.

Because when we really listen, we often learn a lot.

Maybe your puppy is not being stubborn. Maybe they are confused.

Maybe they are not ignoring you. Maybe they are overstimulated.

Maybe they are not “bad.” Maybe they need a different kind of support than your last dog did.

It’s not about doing it to the dog. It’s about doing it with the dog.

Be clear when you’re talking, and open when you’re listening

When you are teaching your puppy, clarity matters.

Be clear with your cues.

Be clear with your expectations.

Be clear with your routines.

Be clear about what you want your puppy to do.

But when it comes to listening?

Be open.

Be curious.

Be willing to notice what is not working.

Be willing to admit this dog may need something different.

Be willing to set aside what “should” be happening and look at what is happening.

Sometimes that is the real light bulb moment.

Final thoughts

Your puppy may not be listening the way you want yet.

But before we jump to frustration, it is worth asking:

Am I really listening to my puppy?

Because every dog can learn. Every situation can improve. But that starts with understanding the individual dog in front of you — not just the one you had before, the breed you expected, or the picture you had in your head.

Your dog has something to say.

The more open you are to hearing it, the better your relationship becomes.
