New year, new goals: Celebrating national train your dog month

The start of a new year always feels like a fresh slate—a time to reflect, set goals, and take steps toward making life better for ourselves and our dogs. This January, there’s an extra reason to focus on your dog’s training: it’s National train your dog month!

Training isn’t just about teaching your dog new tricks or better manners (though those are always a bonus). It’s about building a stronger bond, boosting your dog’s confidence, and making life easier and more enjoyable for both of you.

An exciting announcement!

Before we dive into this month’s training focus, I have some exciting news to share! I’m honored to have been voted to serve on the Board of Directors for the Association for Professional Dog Trainers (APDT).

This is a huge privilege and an opportunity to contribute to the mission of promoting education, professionalism, and excellence in the dog training industry. I’m thrilled to be part of a team dedicated to supporting trainers and dog owners alike, and I can’t wait to use this experience to bring even more value to you and your dog in the coming year.

This honor reminds me of how important it is to set meaningful goals—whether it’s for professional growth, personal achievements, or your relationship with your dog.

Why January is the perfect time to train

January is all about fresh starts, and National train your dog month couldn’t come at a better time. Here’s why this is the perfect time to focus on your dog’s training:

A clean slate:

The new year offers the chance to reset routines, revisit training basics, and start working toward new skills.

Cold weather motivation:

Winter can feel like a slow season for outdoor activities, but training gives you and your dog a productive and fun way to stay engaged indoors.

The gift of accomplishment:

There’s nothing like crossing “improve leash manners” or “teach reliable recall” off your list to start the year feeling accomplished!

Setting training goals for the New Year

If you’re ready to set goals for your dog’s training this year, here are a few ideas to inspire you:

1. Strengthen the basics

Polishing up core skills like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and polite leash walking can make everyday life easier and less stressful.

2. Add enrichment to your routine

Interactive training, puzzle toys, and scent games are fantastic ways to keep your dog’s mind sharp and reduce boredom-related behaviors.

3. Tackle a specific challenge

Is there something you’ve been meaning to work on, like jumping on guests or pulling on the leash? Set a goal to address it this year—you’ll feel so proud when you see progress!

4. Have fun together

Training doesn’t have to be all business. Learning new tricks or starting an activity like agility or nose work can be a wonderful way to bond and have fun.
