As we continue to celebrate National train your dog month this January, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what sets the foundation for success in training and behavior—and one of the most powerful tools you can use is consistency.
Whether you’re teaching basic manners, working on a specific challenge, or simply building a stronger bond with your dog, routines can make all the difference. Dogs thrive on predictability, and by creating consistent patterns in their daily lives, you’re giving them the structure they need to succeed.
This month is particularly special for me, as I’m honored to begin serving on the Board of Directors for the Association for Professional Dog Training (APDT). The APDT sponsors National Train Your Dog Month to highlight the importance of training and encourage dog owners to take the next step in strengthening their relationship with their pups. Let’s dive into how consistency and routines can help you do just that.
---
Why consistency is key
Dogs are creatures of habit. Predictable routines give them a sense of security, help them understand what’s expected of them, and reduce stress and anxiety. When your dog knows what’s coming next, they’re more likely to feel confident and behave predictably, too.
Here’s how consistency works its magic:
1. Builds trust and security
Dogs thrive in environments where they know what to expect. Consistency in feeding times, walks, and training sessions helps them feel safe and reduces confusion or uncertainty.
2. Reinforces training
Training isn’t just about teaching behaviors—it’s about practicing them consistently. Repeating the same cues, rewards, and rules across different scenarios helps your dog learn faster and retain what they’ve learned.
3. Improves communication
When you’re consistent, your dog starts to associate your words, gestures, and routines with specific outcomes. This clarity strengthens your bond and makes it easier for your dog to follow your lead.
4. Reduces problem behaviors
Routines prevent many common issues like excessive barking, destructive chewing, or accidents in the house. A predictable schedule for exercise, play, and downtime keeps your dog mentally and physically satisfied.

Creating routines that work
Building routines doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s all about finding patterns that fit your lifestyle and meet your dog’s needs. Here are a few simple ways to get started:
1. Stick to set routines in time blocks instead of specific times
Aim to feed, walk, and train your dog at roughly the same time block each day (ex breakfast 6-8am). This creates predictability and ensures your dog knows when to expect their routine, while keeping flexibility in their routine and avoiding stress when things have to be shifted.
2. Establish training sessions into your routines
Incorporate short, focused training sessions into your daily routine. Even 5–10 minutes a day can lead to noticeable progress over time. Or for even more seamless transitions, start to put your training into your routines - it won't feel like training for either one of you and you will soon have a pup who knows exactly what to do for each routine before you know it.
3. Add enrichment activities
Schedule enrichment activities like puzzle toys, scent games, or interactive play to keep your dog’s mind engaged and reduce boredom.
4. Create a bedtime ritual
End the day with a calming routine, like a gentle walk or cuddle session, to help your dog relax and prepare for sleep.
